Description: WW1 Ruhleben Spandau POW Camp Xmas 1917 Greetings Postcard - Rare DESCRIPTION Please find offered for sale an original and rare postcard from WW1 Ruhleben POW camp. The card was produced for Christmas 1917 and the design shows a prisoner bored to death of waiting to be liberated! By this time most had been held for 3 years. The card was sent by Richard Herbert Carrad from Kitchen No.1 to Mrs. Robinson, Bishops Place Wells, Somerset. The information below about the camp and Richard Carrad was found online. Ruhleben Internment Camp In 1914, thousands of British civilians and merchant seamen, along with foreigners from other nationalities with British connections, were interned at the hastily constructed prisoner of war camp at Ruhleben racecourse by Spandau, near Berlin, Germany. Most would not see freedom from the camp until the end of the war but managed to maintain a unique way of life for the four years of their unwelcome internment. Richard Herbert Carrad Richard Herbert Carrad was appointed in March 1915 by Powell, the camp captain at Ruhleben, to be on the committee of the Kitchen Department, as reported in the Scotsman on 29/3/1915 (p.8) and the Times on 29/3/1915 ("More and Better Food at Ruhleben" p.4 col A). The department's remit was to control the kitchens and all questions regarding the food of the prisoners. Carrad was sketched by C. M. Horsfall for the second issue of the Ruhleben Camp Magazine (April 1916, p.11), in which he is described as working in the "end kitchen". Carrad's model of a motor boat, built whilst he was interned in Ruhleben, was photographed and displayed in the sixth issue of the Ruhleben Camp Magazine (June 1917). Carrad was released back to England on March 6th 1918. At the point of his release he was noted in the National Archives MT9 files as having been resident in Barrack 17 A great addition for the collector of good period militaria.
