The cartoon is an adaptation of Charles Dickens's 1843 novella A Christmas Carol, and stars Scrooge McDuck as Ebenezer Scrooge. Many other Disney characters, primarily from the Mickey Mouse universe, as well as Jiminy Cricket from Pinocchio (1940), and characters from The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949) and Robin Hood (1973), were cast throughout the film. The featurette was produced by Walt Disney Productions and released by Buena Vista Distribution on December 16, 1983, with the re-issue of The Rescuers (1977). In the United States, it was first aired on television on NBC, on December 10, 1984. Mickey's Christmas Carol was largely adapted from the 1974 Disneyland Records audio musical An Adaptation of Dickens' Christmas Carol. The musical featured similar dialogue and a similar cast of characters. Additionally this film was the last time that Clarence Nash voiced Donald Duck before his death two years later. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 1984, but lost to Jimmy Picker's Sundae in New York.[3] It was the first nomination for a Mickey Mouse short since Mickey and the Seal (1948). Plot Ebenezer Scrooge (Scrooge McDuck), a greedy and lonely moneylender of Victorian era London, resents the merriment of Christmas. On Christmas Eve, he refuses to give money to a panhandler outside his counting house, declines his nephew Fred (Donald Duck)'s invitation to Christmas dinner, and dismisses two gentlemen (Rat and Mole) fundraising aid for the poor. His overworked and underpaid employee, Bob Cratchit (Mickey Mouse), who Scrooge pays just a little extra to do his laundry, requests to have half of Christmas Day off, to which Scrooge reluctantly accepts on the condition that Cratchit is docked half a day's pay. That night, he is visited by the shackled ghost of his late business partner Jacob Marley (Goofy). Marley warns Scrooge to change his wicked ways or be condemned to suffer in the afterlife as he does and that three spirits will visit him during the night. At one o'clock, Scrooge is visited by the Ghost of Christmas Past (Jiminy Cricket), who shows him visions of his early life of his time as an employee under Fezzywig (Mr. Toad). There, at Fezziwig's Christmas party and the young Scrooge meets a young woman named Isabelle (Daisy Duck), whom he falls in love. Ten years pass and Isabelle has wondered when they will marry. Scrooge declines, loving money more than her by foreclosing the mortgage on her cottage. Seeing this, a distraught Scrooge leaves the Ghost not to show any more visions as he returns home. Scrooge next meets the gigantic, merry Ghost of Christmas Present (Willie the Giant), who takes Scrooge to Bob Cratchit's house. Scrooge sees that their Christmas dinner for their family of five consists of barely enough food to feed one person, and becomes especially concerned when he sees Bob's ill son Tiny Tim (Morty Mouse). The Ghost hints that if things continue the way they are Tim will soon die. The Ghost leaves him with the Ghost of Christmas Future, who takes Scrooge into the future and arrives at a cemetery where they find Bob and his family mourning Tiny Tim. As Scrooge asks the spirit that the events can still be changed, they witness two gravediggers (Weasels) remarking how no one mourns over the death of the man they were burying. After they left, the Ghost points out the unloved man's neglected tombstone; Scrooge sees the tombstone bears his own name. After revealing his face (Pete), the Ghost shoves him into the grave while dubbing him "The richest man in the cemetery". Falling into his own coffin which opens to show the gates of Hell while vowing to change his ways, Scrooge finds himself back in his own his bedroom, where he discovers that it's Christmas Day. Filled with glee, Scrooge begins spreading happiness and joy around London, donating a sizable amount of money to the gentlemen's charity and reconciling with Fred. Traveling to the Cratchit house, Scrooge resumes his curmendougly persona by saying he expects more of Bob, then surprises everyone with gifts of a prize turkey, toys, and giving Cratchit a substantial raise along with making him his partner. Tiny Tim says "God bless us, everyone" as the film ends. Opening titles for Mickey's Christmas Carol illustrated by Michael Peraza Jr., in sepia tone with Mickey Mouse as Bob Cratchit. Reportedly, it was because Walt Disney Pictures believed he would not agree to do a voice for animated film. However, when Young learned about the film in production from a friend preparing to audition for the lead, he contacted the film company to request an audition. The resulting audition was successful and Young learned about the studio's reason for not contacting him. In reaction, Young responded, "Hey, I worked in television for five years with a talking horse. At this point in my career, nothing's beneath me." As it happened, Young was praised for the role and continued to voice Scrooge McDuck throughout his life.
