Description: Vintage solid sterling silver large and massive (approx. 2 1/8" tall with bale and jump ring; weight approx. 8.8 g) Catholic Crucifix pendant featuring the "Pardon" ornate design with a detailed high-relief iconic depiction of the Crucified Savior, and image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus with monogram of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary on the reverse. The bottom part of the reverse bears the "HMH STERLING" print. It has been confirmed using the silver acid test. The Crucifix has visible vintage or antique appearance with signs of wear due to age and devotional wearing, such as diminished quality of the artwork, deformations of its original shape, dents, scratches, and patches of dark silver patina or discoloration. The size and weight of the pendant are shown on the photographs for this listing. The obverse shows a large nameplate just above the Crucified Savior. It bears inscription in Latin "Jesus Nazarenus Rex Judaeorum" meaning "Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews" representing the inscription made by Pontius Pilate. The crossbar ends are decorated with floral or vine-like ornaments symbolizing the life-giving nature of the Christian Cross, and also referring to the preaching of Christ: "I am the vine; you are the branches" (John 15:5).The reverse shows an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus surrounded by inscriptions: “FATHER, FORGIVE THEM" (the last words of Jesus) and "BEHOLD THE HEART WHICH HAS SO LOVED MEN".In the bottom part of the Crucifix, there is a symbolic representation of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary depicted as the Latin "Auspice Maria" monogram (intertwined letters A and M) meaning "Under the protection of Mary".The crucifix was introduced at the Marian Congress of Rome in 1904, with the support of his Eminence Cardinal Coullié, Archbishop of Lyon. Pope St. Pius X granted the following historic indulgences in association with the Pardon Crucifix:"- Whoever carries on his person the Pardon Crucifix, may thereby gain an indulgence.- For devoutly kissing the Crucifix, an indulgence is gained.- Whoever says one of the following invocations before this crucifix may gain each time an indulgence: “Our Father who art in heaven, forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” “I beg the Blessed Virgin Mary to pray to the Lord our God for me.”- Whoever, habitually devout to this Crucifix, will fulfill the necessary conditions of Confession and Holy Communion, may gain a Plenary Indulgence on the following feasts: On the feasts of the Five Wounds of our Lord, the Invention of the Holy Cross, the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, the Immaculate Conception, and the Seven Dolors of the Blessed Virgin Mary.- Whoever at the moment of death, fortified with the Sacraments of the Church, or contrite of heart, in the supposition of being unable to receive them, will kiss this Crucifix and ask pardon of God for his sins, and pardon his neighbor, will gain a Plenary Indulgence."
