Description: A large oil on canvas (26 1/2" by 38 1/2", and 32 1/2" by 44 1/4" framed) painting of a forest of evergreen and birch near a picturesque winding creek, likely in eastern Europe, signed at lower left somewhat indecipherably (probably a listed artist). The name may be Lithuanian or other Baltic state. The work is beautifully painted but has darkened with surface soiling and old varnish. There appear to be a few areas which were the subject of test cleanings (by tree at right and at upper left sky). The painting needs to be professionally cleaned, after which it will emerge nearly unrecognizable, when compared to its present as-found state. Frame also needs attention with loss of gold surface etc. The painting likely dates to the 1930's through 1950.
