Vintage Excellent 1960s Borsalino Gray BEAVER & HARE (Rabbit) Fedora 7-1/8

Description: EXCELLENT! OUTSTANDING! Very RARE sharp looking vintage 1960s Borsalino fedora. Size 7-1/8. It's a light gray Fedora. Made from a mix of Beaver and Hare (English Rabbit). This is EXTREMELY SOFT AND PLIABLE and is easily hand-bashed! But as dad and grandson were working the fedora it just looked best when it was steamed into a pinched crown, teardrop fedora hat. It does look OUTSTANDING shaped like this! First we need to try and explain why the pictures are coming out so strangely. As we are looking at the first set of pictures it appears that the hat has different shades going from a gray to dark gray and black even. This is GRAY all over the hat! The color is uniform but because the light and camera angles just makes it look like that! If anyone out there knows how we can do a much better job on taking pictures please write to us! That is NOT how this looks in person! This is so hard to explain! Since this has that longer hair, the pictures do NOT do it justice! It’s the same COLOR all over the hat! Those dark spots are maybe because of the long hair putting shadows on the part at different angles. So what we did was try and take picture by moving it slightly so you can see how that shadow follows as we move it. Even taking pictures from the top down it still came out wrong! Showing darker shades on one side while the other side remains the actual color. So we popped the top us and took a few pictures so you can see that the dark shadows move along with the different angles we took pictures. What we are trying to say is that the hat is ALL THE SAME COLOR! With NO dirt or dark areas! If you have any questions please write to us. This is made from the Borsalino Beaver & Rabbit (English Hare), back in the day when Borsalino’s hats were actually made from this mix. It’s extremely soft to the touch! It is NOT a floppy hat! This is not a thin lightweight fedora. It’s a thicker than most of the Borsalino’s that sells today. When working the hat on dad’s workbench, that is the best way to actually feel what the hat is made from. Depending on how soft and easily shaped it is and touching the hat when working on it you can best tell what the material is while working on it. Initially this looks like a Pure Hare but it was easily determined that this is a mix of high quality Beaver and Hare! If we had to qualify this as a Beaver only it would be a Beaver Twenty but because of the mix of Hare it feels more like a TwentyFive. You can see the fine texture and finish on this fedora. This was left with the long hair still on it so it has that GRIZZLY look to it a bit. The way they do this is there is a “Sanding” machine that each hat goes through because the hat blanks are just that. Whatever the material that is made from like Beaver, Rabbit and even Fur Felt the blanks are not completely flush or evenly shaved. The place the hat on a hat block and the sanding machine slowly sands off the excess material until it’s smooth and even. This one they only smoothed it out to the point where the hairs were even but not sanded all the way down. I’m hoping I explained that well? My grandson says there are videos online where you can see the hat making process and will explain it much much better than we did! We have actually see this process in person! A small custom hat maker (one of our very favorites!) in Elizabeth Colorado, “POWDER RIVER HATS”. His custom hats are OUTSTANDING an and he allowed us to watch and teach us how hats are made! Really great MAN! Even the original coat trolley string is great! Fully functional! This is a light - medium gray color. The picture of the whole underside is the best representation of the actual color. NOTE:the Borsalino hat box that this was found in does not match the dating of this hat and is for display only, as you can see it’s pretty bad condition. NOTE a shipping outside the Continental USA is without the hat box! It’s to expensive. NOTE: the Italian style hat box is NO longer available, sold to one of dad’s collectors? Borsalino makes some of the finest hats in the world. The hat is a hand shaped piece of art. They just don’t make hats like the nowadays! This is a fedora that will certainly TURN HEADS! We actually measure each hat that we list 3 times to verify the actual size, whether tagged or not, and use the standard TILLEY hat chart to determine the hat Size. The Tilley hat chart was agreed upon in the 1970s by the big hat manufacturers and is still in use today by all most every hat maker. We cannot see any secondary size tag hat but this measures to a a perfect 7-1/8 at 22-3/8 inches.
