Sedwick Treasure Auction 3 (May 29, 2008 Lot 351) Mexico City, Mexico, bust 1 real, Charles III, 1782FF, Grade 1 CT-1414, KM 78.2; 3.1 grams. Choice details despite wear, just a hint of corrosion at edge. Salvaged from the "Coconut Wreck (sunk ca. 1810 off Bermuda). The "Coconut Wreck", sunk off Bermuda ca. 1810, has been acknowledged as the deepest treasure wreck ever found, at a depth of 16,300 feet. Located in 1999 when explorers searched for the lost 1961 "Liberty Bell" space capsule, this shipwreck was eventually salvaged with the help of submarines in 2001. Nicknamed "Piña Colada wreck" and "Atlantic Target Expedition wreck," the wood vessel was loaded with coconuts, hence the name given in the original 2008 sale. 1300 silver coins were retrieved from a chest, along with an ornate gold box that contained 13 gold coins wrapped in a newspaper dated August 6, 1809. In 1810, a 90 feet in length boat, left Kingston Jamaica, with a cargo of coconuts and rum, through the Windward Passage, after delivering slaves in Jamaica. (This was inferred by the paper that had wrapped some of the gold coins found in the wreck, and the holes on the coins found on the bottom of the sea.) The ship, hit a hurricane and sunk to the ocean floor. The Bermuda Triangle had claimed another victim. 150 years later, the Mercury space capsule, Liberty 7, sunk nearby, after the splashdown and recovery of astronaut Gus Grisson. 40 years later, a deep sea explorer, Curt Newport sought out to recover the Liberty 7, working with the Discovery Channel. Using sonar, he found some promising seafloor targets, and the first target hit paydirt, as the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) found the Liberty 7 at 16,043 feet. Newport's acoustic work showed other promising targets--and one looked like a ship. Since it was located on the sea-lane of the Spanish treasure ships, operation "Atlantic Sands" began. You had 13 Russian oceanographers, head people from the DOE, the Titanic diver, and lawyers and the head of the Shrishov Institute Manned Submersible Laboratory, along with a British television crew to film the expedition. When they found the ship, three miles deep, the saw round objects on the ship. I'm sure they hopped that these objects were coins. But when they got closer, they saw what it was--coconuts! Thus operation "Atlantic Sands" became the "Coconut Wreck!" Now if you look at the picture of the Liberty Bell 7, at the bottom of the ocean floor, and then look at the movie clip of the recovery of the coins its the same equipment! It was wonderfully documented! The entire wreck was photographed and made in a documentary with a budget of almost $3 million dollars. It was the deepest historical find of a wooden ship. About 160 Spanish silver dollars "called pieces of eight" were found on the first day. Elon Musk, who owned SpaceX and Telsa, X, the Boring Company, Neuralink, and Optimus Robots, loved the idea of the highest spaceship—the Liberty 7, was sunk and found by the deepest shipwreck! Musk except for some gold coins, had purchased the entire collection. But in 2008, Elon Musk and Tesla were bleeding money. So now, the richest man in the world, in 2008, was SELLING all of his possessions to get $20 million for Tesla. Elon Musk called it the Christmas Eve Miracle, when finally, the board members relented, and TSLA was able to get a $20 million dollar lifeline. The coins, in their entirety, were then sold to Sedwick coins, who had a tepid auction in 2009 during the great financial crisis, and this coin, was sold in the May 20, 2008 auction. Sedwick however, had lost interest in the coins because he was more interested in selling coins from the much more publicized and well known Atocha, which ended up being a $450 million dollar deal, and the Coconut Wreck coins went in the dustbin of History. And Elon Musk, who founded Paypal, and sunk all his money into electric cars, therefore was the first pedigree owner of these coins, then to Sedwick, then to me, and then to the ebay buyer. Also there was another great twist to this story. A South Florida coin dealer, misrepresented to a client that he had owned these coins, and had “sold them” for over $190,000 without delivering them, and also “sold” 13 $20 American Eagle 1 ounce gold coins, without delivering them. Eventually, in 2014 he was sued and convicted, and went on a payment plan, reimbursing the person who he “sold” the coins to, before he eventually passed away! It is a fantastic and wonderfully intriguing story with just an absolutely wonderful pedigree of ownership! And knowing that you owned the coins from the richest man in the world, who puked them up to help fund Tesla! He probably will be the first trillionaire in the world, who had to firesale his coins for money!
