Description: Fresh 2024 harvest! Serenoa repens 'Cinerea' is the silver-leafed form of Saw Palmetto, which is native from coastal South Carolina to Louisiana. The silver form is mainly found along the east coast of Florida, with some found in Georgia as well. A very silver Saw Palmetto is quite a striking palm, and a great addition to the zone 8-11 garden! A cold-hardy palm, it is capable of withstanding temperatures into the low teens Fahrenheit before suffering serious injury, and possibly down to 10F or lower for brief periods. If you are growing it in zone 8, it's advisable to protect small palms for the first few years if severe cold is forecasted. Serenoa is a clustering palm species, and the trunks will grow maybe 8-10 feet tall over a very long time before falling back down to the ground, or arching over. Occasionally, they will branch above-ground. Small, sharp teeth run along both sides of the petiole, giving the palm its common name. Since it is commonly found growing very close to the beach, the silver form is salt spray tolerant as well. It can be grown in part shade to full sun. Serenoa really doesn't mind being grown in the hottest, driest part of the yard! It's drought tolerant, but only after getting established. Saw Palmetto seems to do better in sandy soils than clay, but can be grown in many soil types. This palm spreads in all directions, so give it some room on all sides when planting it. Germination of Serenoa seeds can be slow and erratic. It's recommended not to remove the papery shell around the seed. Let them soak in 35C water (or moist peat moss) for 7 days continuously, then transfer to pots and provide bottom heat at 30C during the day.
