Description: this work was originally written by omar, but it faced an obscure ending until edward fitzgerald stumbled onto the ancient work of omar, from one of only 7 surviving copies that made its journey to england in the 1800's. fitzgerald not only edited the flimsy manusscript, he made up several more quatrains so the book became a combination of the 2 authors, although fitzgerald first insisted that his name would not appear on the title page; it was only after several editions that his name was added. there is no certain understanding which quatrains were omar's and which were fitzgerald's. there is no relationship from one to the other quatrain, they are random philosophies. the persian artist mahmoud sayah produced these beautiful paintings for the book. so, it was a labor of love. this edition was published in 1947 by random house in the united states. the work has become a classic and it is studied by scholars to this day.the book is a bit over 1 pound in weight and is 6-1/2 x 9-1/2 x 1inches. it is remarkably good condition for its 76 years of age.
