Description: Here is a rare form of a late 18th century fire fighting and naval boarding axe recently discovered in India. Beautifully crafted hand hammer forged steel 1780 head and spike made an effective tool and wicked weapon. Made for the British Royal Navy. The rough forged heads were found in India at same warehouse the flat handle original Skene type tomahawks were found. (Separate listing). Only one had an original handle so reproduction copies of the haft were made of Indian rosewood. The head was preserved in grease, the handles are gorgeous and will only look better with age. The circa 1780 steel head was rough hammer forged, not cast, and expertly ground. It is 8" from edge to tip. Photo 7 best shows the hand ground prong. This example has surface irregularities from hand hammer forging on the the spike. These are not cracks. These were used as boarding weapons and to cut away burning rigging on sailing ships under fire from black powder cannonballs. Comparison photo shows this type with two earlier British or American naval axes. The last two photos show one as found axe with original 18th century handle. The original makers descendants still owned these until I imported a few with handles. Rosewood is historically accurate because it's high natural oil content resists salt water air damage.
