Description: STK: #SWORD-GAPBrought to you by CAMARILLO TRADERS specialists in new, used & antique arms, collectible militaria and rustic ephemera RARE Pre-WWI 1906 Experimental M1905/M1906 Ames A.S. Co. 31.5" Sword & Officer's Nickel Plated Steel Scabbard (Scabbard Made During Civil War Era) Manufacturer: Ames Manufacturing Co., A.S. Co. Model: M1905/M1906 Blade Length: 31.50" Serial #: N/A TEXT GOES HERETEXT GOES HERE --> Offered here is a Pre-WWI era US experimental M1905/06 Officer saber sword and nickel plated metal scabbard. This sword was developed as a result of President Roosevelt asking to upgrade designs on military items like rifles, bayonets and swords. This sword was based on the M1902 Officer's saber but had a bird's head grip. Approximately 1,300 swords were manufactured by Ames and Springfield Armory. They were tested by cavalry, infantry and artillery regiments. A few were tested by Engineer, Signal Corps and Staff units. Testing occurred between 1906 and 1909. The interest died in early 1910. Some scabbards were made of wood and covered with cow leather for enlisted men and pigskin for officers. There were three lengths produced - 27", 30" and 32". This one is a 31.5" sword. Some came with nickel-plated steel scabbards, this one is made of steel. Overall, this sword is in Very Good - Very Good Plus condition, considering its age and history. The pommel and knuckle-bow are securely fastened to the tang. The pommel is in the shape of a birds' head and the metal is checkered. The checkering is mostly distinct with some light scattered wear. They have light scattered impact marks, oxidation and scrapes. Some of the finish has worn off the leading edges. The remaining finish has turned a darker patina color. The grip is made of shark skin. There are no rips or tears, but there are some areas where the pebbled texture has worn to a smooth finish. There is also some light discoloration. The skin is wrapped with braided chord. It is tightly bound with no fraying material. Some of the brass has started to turn a darker patina color. The blade's spine, sides and fullers have light scrapes and scuffs. There are no nicks or dings on the blade's cutting edge and it appears to have been sharpened at some point. In our opinion, it does not look like the original factory edge. The tip is intact and comes to a semi-sharp straight point. The nickel blade finish is mostly intact with a few spots of light discoloration. The left ricasso is marked "U.S.", the right ricasso is marked "A.S. Co. / 1906" with a flaming bomb in between them. There are no other visible markings. This scabbard was made during the American Civil War period most likely, due to the inspector marks on the drag. The scabbard is in Very Good - Very Good Plus condition, considering its age and history. The suspension rings are securely fastened to the body, they swivel and rotate freely. There are some light scrapes and oxidation on them. The throat and drag are securely attached to the main body. The body has some light scrapes and very light layer of scattered oxidation. There is some sticky "tape residue" midway down the scabbard. We did not want to clean it and take a chance of taking off any of the finish. Most all of the nickel plated finish remains. The sword slides in and out correctly and easily. The bottom left side drag is marked "ADK" (Andrew D. King 1840-1865) which means more than likely this scabbard was taken from another earlier made sword. This sword and scabbard will be a great addition to your US experimental weapons collection, or a sword collection in general. As with all used items, a light cleaning may be necessary to meet your standards. Please see our photographs for a better understanding of the contents and its condition. Shipping: Calculated.
