Description: Here is a rare signed antique painting with historical significance by artist Francis Wheaton from the 1890s, done on recycled wood which has on the reverse a carved Native American shield and spear symbol. Francis Wheaton at this time lived among the the "Jackson Whites" of the Ramapo Mountains and "taught them the way of the world and fundamentals of a religious life" (per his 1940s NY Times obituary). Re the Jackson Whites, pulled from a source online: "As far back as the revolutionary war New Jerseyans have heard, and told, tales of a motley group of social outcasts who had taken refuge in the northeastern hills of the state. The group, alleged to be comprised of a hybrid of renegade Indians, escaped slaves, Hessian mercenary deserters, and West Indian prostitutes, came to be known as the Jackson Whites." Dimensions: art 8 1/2" by 14", frame 11" by 16". I always combine shipping on multiple orders.
