Description: OVERVIEW: Orlie's Lowriding magazine was created by Orlando (Orlie) Coca in 1991 in Corrales, New Mexico. Mr Coca was always an active promoter of the lowrider culture, and this magazine represented his passion. Content included technical information and extensive show and event coverage based on his travels. He was supported in this endeavor by his wife Lupe, his son Art and his daughter Sandy. The magazine featured lowrider cars, "bombs" (vintage American cars from about 1930 to 1955), mini-trucks, euro's, and motorcycles.Mr Coca first achieved success in 1978 with battery-powered hydraulic systems to allow lowrider cars to be easily raised and lowered. One of Orlie's passions was car-hopping, i.e., making cars "dance". He is credited with organizing the first car-hopping events using his hydraulic systems. With success came a multi-million dollar business and as many as eight retail shops including: Long Beach, California (his first); Bellflower; Pico Rivera; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and, Phoenix, Arizona. This earned him the moniker, "The Godfather of Hydraulics".Orlie and his family were victims in a hostage-robbery scheme in September, 1990, and he subsequently returned to New Mexico where he had been born and still had family. From this incident came renewed passion for the lowriding culture, and it led to the creation of the magazine. Lowriding was incorporated in November, 1991 in Corrales.The magazine was very successful against other competitors at this time -- Lowrider, Street Customs and Street Low.In 1999, Orlie became ill and couldn't travel. He sold the title to Ristra Publishing in Albuquerque, but his name renamed on the masthead page through some issues into 2000.Ristra redesigned the front covers in late 2000, and the publisher and editor became Dana Buchanan. However, the magazine suffered financially and ended with the July, 2002 issue.Mr Coca died in 2012.
