L. Divita) size: Small -1 Original World War ll Navy Gold button for Navy dress whites This is an original lot of World War ll United States Navy uniforms that belonged to Lory L Divita a member of the United States Naval Air Corps during the Second World War. Lory Lawrence Divita was born on June 27 1923 to Italian immigrants in Chicago Illinois. He graduated high school in 1941, months before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Being from an Italian neighborhood he had a strong sense of community and enlisted in the United States Navy on June 29, 1942, during the Second World War. Divita was assigned to the United States Naval Air Forces and was trained as an enlisted man. Stationed at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, Texas he was trained in servicing United States Navy aircraft and providing assistance in the landing of US Navy aircraft aboard aircraft carriers. Assigned to Carrier Air Wing 11 in October of 1942 he would have served under Captain Ross Drenning. Later that month the CVG-11 was sent to NAS Barber Point at Oahu, Hawaii to prepare and train for combat missions. After four months of training in Hawaii Divita and his unit embarked on the USS Alabama en route to Fiji. At this time in early 1943, the Japanese still retained a fair amount of air superiority in the islands of the Pacific as Allied ground forces were just kicking off their island-hopping campaign. When the CVG-11 arrived in the Pacific they came aboard the only operational aircraft carrier and had to be based at Guadalcanal. While stationed at Guadalcanal Devita was tasked with servicing planes for airmen whose current mission was to provide escort for US Navy and Marine torpedo bombers. On August 1.1943 CVG-11 left Guadalcanal and returned to NAS Alameda for their next assignment: carrier operations. After almost 6 months of training the CVG-11 flew aboard the USS Hornet. From there Devita and his unit continued operations against the Japanese over Leyte Gulf, Indochina, Formosa, and China from 1944-1945. During this time Devita was promoted from a Seamen First Class to Petty Officer First Class making him eligible for wearing the US Navy grey uniform in this lot. After destroying 272 Japanese planes and sinking 100,000 tons of enemy shipping Devita and the CVG-11 were replaced by Air Group 17. For their actions, Carrier Air Group 11 and Devita were awarded the Presidential Unit citation upon returning to the US on February 24, 1945. When the war ended on September 2, 1945, Lory Lawrence Devita was discharged stateside from the United States Navy at the rank of Petty Officer First Class after almost 3 years of service during World War II. Devita returned to Chicago after the war and bought Herbert Men’s Shop of Chicago. He married Virginia Greco and moved to Oak Brook, Illinois (a Chicago suburb). He was a loving father of 2 children and an avid football fan. Sadly Lory Lawrence Divita passed away on June 4, 2005, at the age of 81 just short of his 82nd birthday. Lory Divita was laid to rest at Queen of Heaven Catholic Cemetery in Hillside, Illinois after 81 years of service to his country and community. The items themselves are in great condition with all buttons present. The grey uniforms are known as Navy Grays and were popular amongst naval aviators. Navy grays were introduced in 1943 to the United States Navy and at first, according to Navy regulations were only available to Navy officers. But eventually were allowed for use by petty officers which is the rank Devita was promoted to by the end of the war. The navy grays saw limited use in the United States Navy being introduced in 1943 midway through the Second World War and were abolished by the Navy in 1949. The navy greys were popular amongst naval aviators who liked the sharp look the grey offered. The navy greys got their name from the ships the sailors served on as they were painted a similar gray. The jackets themselves are beautiful pieces and great examples of US Navy grays from the Second World War. They are privately tailored as most US Navy grays were as they were not produced in big numbers. One jacket is privately tailored by Palm Beach Suits for Marshall Fields & Company and is a size 37 long. This particular jacket is a different color of gray compared to the other jacket is slate gray. Produced in a considerably lighter material making it durable for hot climates such as the Pacific where sailors had been stationed. The other jacket is a darker shade of gray produced by Haspel Tailors of New Orleans. Compared to the other jacket this is a heavier jacket suitable for cooler climates. Both jackets are as mentioned in amazing condition and appear to have seen limited use as these jackets did not see extensive use. Finding United States Navy gray uniforms is generally hard to come across as they only saw use for 6 years from 1943-1949. In the grouping included is an enlisted men’s white jumper and since Devita was a petty officer he would have also been issued enlisted men’s garments. The United States Navy white jumper was part of the Navy Undress Whites. Sailors often wore this uniform in tropical and hot climates while performing work duties aboard ships. As expected with white clothing from almost 80 years ago it is not glowing white. However, the jumper itself has no signs of wear and with a wash could be cleaned. The jumper is also named “L. L.Devita” & “L.L.D.” in several places on the bottom of the jumper as these items belonged to Mr.Devita.Also included is a Navy button that does not match with any of the uniforms but instead belongs to the US Navy officer white uniform. The button was found in the pocket of one of the jackets. As mentioned everything is in great condition despite being nearly 80 years old and seeing use in the Pacific during the Second World War. Considering that Navy grays are hard to come across in this great condition and identified to United States Navy sailor who served in the US Navy Air Corps during the Second World War this is a rare lot. This is an amazing grouping of uniforms from the Second World War that show the story and service of an American hero who served with the US Navy Air Corps risking his life for his country fighting against the Japanese. This would make an amazing gift for a history buff or a perfect addition to any collection.
