By any rational measure of comedy, this medieval romp from the Monty Python troupe certainly belongs on the short list of candidates. According to Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide, it's "recommended for fans only," but we say hogwash to that--you could be a complete newcomer to the Python phenomenon and still find this send-up of the Arthurian legend to be wet-your-pants hilarious. It's basically a series of sketches woven together as King Arthur's quest for the Holy Grail, with Graham Chapman as the King, Terry Gilliam as his simpleton sidekick Patsy, and the rest of the Python gang filling out a variety of outrageous roles. The comedy highlights are too numerous to mention, but once you've seen Arthur's outrageously bloody encounter with the ominous Black Knight (John Cleese), you'll know that nothing's sacred in the Python school of comedy. From holy hand grenades to killer bunnies to the absurdity of the three-headed knights who say "Ni--!," this is the kind of movie that will strike you as fantastically funny or just plain silly, but why stop there? It's all over the map, and the pace lags a bit here and there, but for every throwaway gag the Pythons have invented, there's a bit of subtle business or grand-scale insanity that's utterly inspired. The sum of this madness is a movie that's beloved by anyone with a pulse and an irreverent sense of humor. If this movie doesn't make you laugh, you're almost certainly dead. * VOL. 2 - THE SECOND (IN SEQUENCE, NOT QUALITY) MONTY PYTHON'S FLYING CIRCUS VIDEOCASSETTE (1969/1970) Paramount Home Video (1992) Featuring: The Argument Clinic, The Church Police, The Spanish Inquisition, The Semaphore Version of Wuthering Heights Congratulation! You've found The Second (in Sequence, Not Quality) Monty Python's Flying Circus videocassette. It's the video series everyone's been waiting years for, and it's direct from "O Spartan Dog, more fell than anguish, hunger, or the sea! Look on the tragic loading of this bed!", Ooops....our apologies... wrong liner notes... let's see.. ah, here we are... the long-running BBC TV Show. Among the bits, and naughty bits, include on this little gem are: The Spanish Inquistion: The epic struggle of three actors attempt to get into the right sketch. Plus - The Semaphore Version of Wuthering Heights, The Drama Inspector, the ever popular Argument Clinic and Rat Cuisine. * Monty Pythons Flyng Circus Fifth Symphony Actors: Monty Python's Flying Circus, Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle Studio: Paramount First of all, we'd like to say that there will be no graphic cannibalism in Monty Python's Flying Circus Fifth Symphony videocassette. Okay, there may be a little cannibalism, but there certainly wont be any Spam. Well, there will be some Spam, naturally, but there wont be too much cannibalism or Spam in this collection of ridiculous bits from Monty Python's long running BBC TV Series. We promise. Almost. Here's some of the many bits that wont have any of you-know-what: Spam, The Royal Navy, Gumby Brain Surgery, World Forum Soccer Quiz and just a smattering of cannibalism. Monty Python and the Holy Grail [VHS] (1975)Monty Python’s Flying Circus (known during the final series as just Monty Python) is a British sketch comedy series created by the comedy group Monty Python and broadcast by the BBC from 1969 to 1974. The shows were composed of surreality, risqué or innuendo-laden humour, sight gags and observational sketches without punchlines. It also featured animations by Terry Gilliam, often sequenced or merged with live action. The first episode was recorded on 7 September and broadcast on 5 October 1969 on BBC One, with 45 episodes airing over four series from 1969 to 1974, plus two episodes for German TV. The show often targets the idiosyncrasies of British life, especially that of professionals, and is at times politically charged. The members of Monty Python were highly educated. Terry Jones and Michael Palin are Oxford University graduates; Eric Idle, John Cleese, and Graham Chapman attended Cambridge University; and American-born member Terry Gilliam is an Occidental College graduate. Their comedy is often pointedly intellectual, with numerous erudite references to philosophers and literary figures. The series followed and elaborated upon the style used by Spike Milligan in his ground breaking series Q5, rather than the traditional sketch show format. The team intended their humour to be impossible to categorise, and succeeded so completely that the adjective "Pythonesque" was invented to define it and, later, similar material. The Pythons play the majority of the series characters themselves, including the majority of the female characters, but occasionally they cast an extra actor. Regular supporting cast members include Carol Cleveland (referred to by the team as the unofficial "Seventh Python"), Connie Booth (Cleese's first wife), series Producer Ian MacNaughton, Ian Davidson, Neil Innes (in the fourth series), and the Fred Tomlinson Singers (for musical numbers). The series' theme song is the first segment of John Philip Sousa's The Liberty Bell, chosen because it was in the public domain and thus could be used without charge.
