Mathews' House - 1st Manassas Battlefield – Civil War Artifacts - 3978

Description: Original lead bullets excavated from the Civil War battlefields around Fredericksburg, Virginia. They are the same type ammunition that would have been carried at First Manassas. The center bullet is a Federal issue for the .58 Springfield rifle or other contract rifles of the same caliber. The bullet at left is a Federal issue .58 Williams Cleaner, used when fired to clean the black powder fouling out of the rifle barrel. The .58 caliber bullet at right has been fired. The Confederacy made three ring bullets but they were of a lower quality casting and the base was usually off center. It is hard to tell which side used the bullet after they have been fired. The .58 caliber rounds used a paper cartridge. The white patina is due to oxidation in the ground. The Matthews at the “Stone House” found themselves in the thick of the fighting during the first battle near Manassas. The battle began a third of a mile north of the Stone House where a brigade of Southerners, hurrying from Stone Bridge, met Union attackers advancing south on the Sudley - Manassas Road. From the shelter of the Stone House, retreating Southerners fired on the advancing Yankees until the 27th New York Infantry drove them from this cover, across the Warrenton Turnpike, and up Henry Hill. The scene was reproduced from the original photograph taken shortly after the battle. The artifacts come as shown in an 8” x 12” “Riker” style glass top case which can be opened by taking the pins out. The artifacts are just pressed in, not glued. All of the artifacts are guaranteed to be original as stated. A hand signed and dated “Certificate of Authenticity” will be issued by Collectors Frame with a photograph and the listed description of the items purchased. The documents pictured will also be included. Please see our "About” for more information on the framing and artifacts.
