Description: A large rare octagonal late 16th to early 17th century Nuremberg alms charger plate. Made of brass with hand hammered, embossed reppousse decoration. The center panel depicting profile portrait of King Henry IV of France framed in beading. The charger is dated 1601 and engraved H. IV for (Henry IV). The outer border embossed and chased with mythical birds and foilage within a beaded rim and rolled edge. Measures app. 23.5" The charger was originally a thick sheet of brass that has worn very thin throughout the centuries. There are holes, splits, cracks, oxidation, and a large solder repair to the back center. The back is patinated under the roll of the rim, and there are later added brass hangers with picture wire.
