HV filter capacitor set for D&A Maverick and MDX amplifiers

Description: Here we have for sale a set of electrolytic filter capacitors to replace the five original parts in your D&A "Maverick" or "MDX" linear amplifier. And since I'm only selling parts for it I don't have to pretend that it's built to use on ham frequencies. The high-voltage filter capacitors in this family of 7- or 8-tube amplifiers are arranged in two series sets: One series string of three, and one series string of two. The first one filters the "high" side B+ power and the second one filters the "low" side B+. What we're selling is a set of capacitors that has a bleeder resistor already installed on each capacitor. THE ORIGINAL BLEEDER RESISTOR SETUP FROM THE FACTORY DOES **NOT** WORK. THEY SHOULD HAVE PLACED ONE RESISTOR ACROSS EACH CAPACITOR. THEY DIDN'T. A SINGLE RESISTOR IS WIRED AS IF IT WOULD BLEED ALL OF THEM. IT WON'T. The individual bleeder resistors also serve to "equalize" the DC voltage so that it divides equally across each capacitor. This is important. The factory used capacitors rated at 350 Volts each. In a series string, three of them add up to a rating of 1050 Volts. A safe breakdown rating to filter the 900 Volts DC that powers the tubes. These parts are rated at 450 Volts. This won't affect performance in any way, only serves to increase the safety margin against breakdown. These parts come from a reputable USA supplier. They are rated at 105 degrees C, rather than the cheaper 85-degree rating. Doesn't mean you have to get the amplifier that hot, just means the quality level of these parts is the higher one of the two choices that are most commonly available. And if you have the very-oldest version of the Maverick that has three relays inside it, that one is different, and you only need three of these capacitors. Until that third relay burns up. It always does, eventually. This is why Ed Dulaney changed the design to use only two relays for all subsequent production, that third relay was just, plain SUICIDAL. If you see that third relay in a Maverick amplifier that hasn't burned up yet, this tells you that the mileage is EXTREMELY low on that unit. There are no pictures showing how to install these, or where they go. If you don't already know how, hire someone who does. This stuff is JUST PLAIN MURDEROUSLY DANGEROUS to attempt repairing as a "first" project. Proper safety training and practices are an ABSOLUTE MUST. Just remember that the factory bleeder resistor DOES NOT WORK and that you must discharge each and every one of the five original capacitors individually. One of these days I should offer an upgrade kit to install fixed negative grid bias on the driver tubes in this family of amplifiers. The driver tubes run with ZERO BIAS and this causes them to run hot and fail before they should. If the Z14 RF choke feeding the driver tubes is visibly burned, you need more than just filter caps to get it running again. An amplifier with that visible symptom has more problems than just 45 year-old filter caps. Just sayin'. The price for this kind of part will be lower elsewhere, especially from chinese sources. The labor cost to install the bleeder resistor on each cap is a part of what you're paying. Maybe I should hire a chinese crew to install them?
