Description: This portrait of a woman and her three children by George Melville Stone (1858-1931) was painted in 1925, based on information available in the Topeka, Kansas public library. Stone, who was from Topeka, Kansas, was a highly accomplished portrait and landscape artist, whose reputation as a portrait painter was international in scope. His signature is clearly visible in the lower left-hand corner of the painting. This striking painting is in very good or better condition. We did remove the deteriorating black paper backing, as well as the nails that held the canvas in place. We then secured the canvas to the frame using modern offset metal brackets. The canvas itself is 22 inches by 28 inches, the frame is 31 inches by 37 inches and the painting and frame together weigh 11 ½ pounds. Please review the accompanying photographs carefully as they are the most important part of the description. Based on our research in the files of the Topeka public library, we believe the individuals depicted in the painting are Katharine Stewart McDermott, and her daughters Jane and Mary Katharine, and her son James Stewart. They were the wife and children of George Thomas McDermott, who died in 1937 at the age of 50. At the time of his death he was a judge on the U.S Circuit Court of Appeals. His wife and mother of the three children died in 1966, the son died on Iwo Jima in 1945, the youngest daughter Mary Katharine (Shideler) died in 2000, and the oldest daughter Jane (Hergenreter) died in 2005. We believe neither of the daughters had children. Apparently, the painting remained in the oldest daughter’s possession until her death. The painting is a little unusual in that it appears to be the only portrait painting of Stone’s that was of more than one individual. A review of the available catalogs indicates that Stone’s other portraits just included one individual. The underlying relationship may explain how that came to be. The husband and father, George McDermott, at one time appears to have been the law partner of George Stone’s younger brother, Robert Stone, so George Stone would probably have known the family on a personal level.
