Description: The Gathering, also referred to as G4Gn (n denoting the number in the series), is a biennial conference that started with G4G1 in 1993. At each Gathering, there are lectures, performance art, puzzle and book displays, close-up and stage magic acts, and guided sculpture building. Traditionally, each conference has a Gift Exchange in which attendees swap puzzles, magic tricks, artwork, mathematical papers, novelty items, books, etc.The following items were exchange gifts from several different Gatherings:Balance Puzzles by Dick HessEach puzzle shows an assembly of weights hanging from a peg on the wall as in the samples on the pages. You must pick whole numbered weights without repeat from a collection so that all elements balance. Elmo's Excellent Excursion by Dick HessElmo is an eager math enthusiast who works through each of the 26 problems to create a final enlightened ending. Find solutions A-Z to duplicate Elmo's feat. Math Dice Puzzles by Dick HessThese 188 puzzles were prepared for the Gathering for Gardner 8 in 2008. Each puzzle is composed in response to the new game of Math Dice invented by Sam Ritchie and produced by Thinkfun. Most puzzles are presented here for the first time. Math Dice Quadragrams by Dick HessEach of these 244 puzzles is composed in response to the game of MathDice invented by Sam Ritchie and produced by Thinkfun. Each puzzle is a "Quadragram" in which 4 scoring numbers are used to produce a target number. Deviating Ball Puzzles by Markus GötzEach puzzle is a ball weighing problem that uses a new (theoretical) balance. All the puzzles were prepared for the Gathering for Gardner 8 (G4G8) held in 2008. Path Puzzles by Rod KimballCAUTION! Soon you will find yourself at the end of a room filled with hidden danger! Your only option is to find your way to the other side. The floor appears solid but only a crooked, narrow path will bear you across. All the rest is as flimsy as paper. Can you reach the other side without falling through? Your only guidance is a map with some clues regarding the location of the path you must walk to get out. The information seems inadequate but it's all there is between you and falling! Measuring Tapes for Circles and Spheres gift from Matt ParkerI'd like to thank Matt Parker for introducing me to diameter tapes (or D-tapes). These are measuring tapes used by foresters to measure the diameters of trees. The forester wraps the measuring tape around a tree as if measuring the circumference, but the scale on the tape is adjusted so that the measurement gives the diameter (assuming the tree has a circular cross section). It uses the fact that C=πD.Parker mentioned the existence of these measuring tapes in his talk at Gathering 4 Gardner 12 and he gave every attendee a D-tape that he made. divisbyzero.com/2016/04/21/measuring-tapes-for-circles-and-spheres/Alice in Wonderland six-sided die by Eric HarshbargerCustom six-sided 1" x 1" x 1" die from G4G12.
