If not for fear of facing a firing squad, how can an army hope to keep its soldiers from fleeing when the going gets tough?Private Edward Slovik was the only such deserter in the WWII U.S. armed forces to face a firing squad, so he remains the litmus test for this issue. Mind you, he wasn't the only deserter during that war, but he alone faced the ultimate penalty. Politically, many will say this docudrama starring Martin Sheen as Slovik spins a sympathetic, weak-kneed web of simplistic "liberal Hollywood"-isms, ones that stack the deck, portraying the man as a saint sacrificed by the Eisenhower administration for its own ends... but, to its credit this movie does nothing of the kind. Neither does it present us with a craven, self-serving, responsibility-shirking Slovik trying to beat the system, a man who deserved his punishment and knew full well what he'd done was a crime.No, what we get is a fine acting job from Sheen portraying a man we can't possibly understand; it's an uphill battle to try to get us to relate to Slovik and ultimately we never do, but that's not the actor's fault. We do relate to the situation, that much is certain. Don't expect any closure, any proven guilt or innocence, any easy fortune cookie wisdom, or anyone to blame (other than the man being executed, arguably...or the capriciousness of Fate's finger that sought him out for punishment among the many others who refused to stand and fight, throughout history). It happened; it has happened many times in armed warfare over the centuries...and it will happen again. No solution in sight. But that doesn't mean this film doesn't have a lot to say.Top condition transfer!
