Demetre started the company with a small staff and outdated machinery, but grew it to over 200 employees and advanced computerized equipment. Demetre sweaters were made in Seattle, Washington. Some say that Demetre was the only sweater for snow country. This brand became the preeminent ski sweater in the United States and achieved a 35 percent penetration of the specialty ski shops. This product was selected as the official sweater for the U.S Ski Team numerous times and was worn at Sarajevo when the U.S. won the gold medal. Breast Cancer Awareness Month began in 1985 as a week-long campaign, and was the result of a partnership between the American Cancer Society and Imperial Chemical Industries. The campaign was launched by Betty Ford, a breast cancer survivor and former First Lady. The initial goal was to educate women about breast cancer and early detection, and to encourage women to get regular mammograms. The campaign has since expanded to address treatment, research, and funding.
