Description: New Haven theology, alias Taylorism, alias Neology; in its own language, with notes appended Author: Dow, Daniel Title: New Haven theology, alias Taylorism, alias Neology; in its own language, with notes appended Publication: Thompson, [CT]: printed by George Roberts, 1834 Description: First edition, 8vo, pp. 56; original printed front wrapper, rear wrapper wanting; mild dampstaining and foxing; ownership signatures on the front wrapper of "Gov, Smith" (possibly John Cotton Smith, Governor of Connecticut 1812-17) and "M. L. North." Nathaniel D. Taylor, speaking from his position of authority at the Yale Divinity School, diverged from the Calvinistic tradition of Edwards, denying that freedom of choice is an illusion. This interpretation of freedom of the will and its modifications of Calvinism aroused a storm of controversy, of which this pamphlet is an early manifestation. By 1838 the debate had passed beyond the borders of New England and the Presbyterian Church was deeply conflicted. "Taylorism [was] an offspring of the forced marriage of New England Calvinism with revivalism. Taylorism was descended from pre-Revolutionary Old Calvinism. It was born during the revivals under Timothy Dwight following the War for Independence. It grew to a maturity during the orthodox controversy with the Unitarians in the 1820's, which enabled it to withstand the conservatives' attack following 1828" (see Sidney Earl Mead's Nathaniel William Taylor 1786-1858, A Connecticut Liberal, at GospelTruth.net).
