Description: CLARK TERRY / BOB BROOKMEYER QUINTET - Straight No Chaser (VINYL LP, 1971) *NEW* Review from another site:Clark Terry (1920-2015) began his career in the orchestras of Count Basie and Charlie Barnet. In the 1950s he worked with Duke Ellington. When he left Ellington he became an employee of NBC, and pursued a solo career. Bob Brookmeyer (1929-2011), played valve trombone in the 1950s in Gerry Mulligan's quartet, where he succeeded Chet Baker. Bob played quite a bit with Stan Getz, Zoot Sims and Manny Albam's orchestra. The Clark Terry-Bob Brookmeyer Quintet was founded in 1961. The album (alternately titled Tonight) is a recording dating from 1964. The quintet had several rhythm members, including Dave Bailey on drums, a long-time partner of Bob, Bill Crow is on double bass and especially the pianist Roger Kellaway, in very good form. A punchy and stimulating rhythm section. In the album notes, its author highlights the brilliant work of pianist Roger Kellaway and finds that drummer Dave Bailey has an impeccable taste for nuances. By adding the beautiful Bill Crow bass with clean lines, we obtain a brilliant rhythm on which the leaders can bounce. The sound of Clark Terry's flugelhorn goes very well with the velvety sound of Bob's trombone. Their respective solos are timeless. Ten tracks, often short, 3 to 4 minutes, but dense and intense. No useless speeches. A diverse choice of songs. A surprise with the first piece of the album, “Tete A Tete”, a successful stride piano solo by Roger Kellaway. Other great titles like “Blindman Blindman”, a typical Herbie Hancock composition (a la Watermelon Man); Thelonious Monk's composition "Straight No Chaser". An original composition by Bob “Blue China”. A wonderful ballad “Sometime ago”, with a whole nuance of sounds. We end with a festival of rhythms on “Hymn” going well. These two musicians had in common obvious aesthetic convergences, human affinities and a certain sense of humor. A record to discover and listen to without moderation. Why aren't they better known?
