Description: Replica of a Cherokee mask from the 20s-30s. Pictures of those I was looking at when I carved it are above as pics 10, 11, 12. 10 and 11 are the same mask, collected by Frank Speck in the 30s and probably by Will West Long. I have been interested in/collecting American Indian physical culture since childhood in the 40s, including duplicating things I could not collect. The Cherokee were neighbors in East Tennessee and the Booger Dance has always been an interest. This one is pretty good, and it is the Cherokee mask I am proudest of. Made from buckeye that came from the estate of one of the famous Cherokee carvers. Dyed with lamp black, as Will West Long used. I carved this one in the 2000s, I think. I made it to be worn. I have not signed it, but I will if you wish. Originals Cherokee buffalo masks are very rare, as buffalo were extinct east of the Mississippi by 1800, but Frank Speck collected the one pictured in the 1930s, probably carved by Will West Long. Appx 12x7x4" Appx 1 lb 12 oz The museum examples above use bear hide, as buffalo were not available to the carvers. Some people identify Booger masks with horns as being buffalo masks. Nope, the horns signify that the Booger has characteristics of the Devil, probably ideas from preachers and the Red Devil Lye box. Kind of like our politicians characterize each other. Even after the buffalo were gone, Cherokees, being a lot like everyone else, knew the difference between a humanoid and a bovine, . Picture 12 is from a museum in Portland which might be as far as you can get from knowing about Cherokee masks, so they asked an expert from somewhere else, who decided it was from the early 1800s, on the speculation that some people might have remembered a buffalo. Not nearly as likely as that someone asked a carver to carve a buffalo mask. No wonder people cannot understand each other if they insist on stereotyping them and then figuring them out.
