Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-GB X-NONE X-NONE Carbonado Black Diamond, Natural and Untreated Rough Raw mineral specimen From Bahia Eastern Brazil25.95 carats / 5.2g Approx 20 x 10mm Carbonado, commonly known as black diamond, is one of the toughest forms of natural diamond. It is an impure, high-density, micro-porous form of polycrystalline diamond consisting of diamond, graphite, and amorphous carbon, with minor crystalline precipitates filling pores and occasional reduced metal inclusions. Colours vary from black through browns to green. Natural black colour in diamonds typically comes from the presence of many small, dark coloured inclusions and fractures. Black diamonds are usually opaque and have an almost metallic lustre. Most black diamonds that are cut and polished to be used in jewellery get their colour though various procedures. These include high pressure/high temperature (HPHT) and radiation treatments. This a natural and untreated Carbonado Specimen ideal for mineral collectors. The black diamond crystals are very small and randomly distributed throughout the host rock as an aggregate, so it is not suitable for cutting and polishing as an individual crystal Mohs Hardness Test for White-Clear Diamond is 10. I have tested a sample of this stock and the Mohs Hardness varies from 10 to <5 depending on which part of the specimen is rubbed on the scratch plate – this is normal for Carbonado as it is an aggregate of the tiny hard black diamond crystals and the surrounding soft sedimentary rock Specific Gravity Test for White-Clear Diamond is usually 3.52 but as Carbonado Black Diamond is a microcrystalline porous aggregate with many tiny diamond crystals in random orientation the Specific Gravity of Carbonado varies from 2.8 to 3.8 depending on the porosity and impurities in the host rock. I have tested a sample from this stock and they are all 3.6-3.8 Specific Gravity. Rough Raw Carbonado often resembles charcoal. The name means "burned" in Portuguese, but what burned it may be truly extraordinary… Carbonado is thought to have an extra-terrestrial origin, which could account for some of its unusual properties. Unlike crystalline diamonds, carbonados are never found in igneous kimberlite rock formed deep within the Earth. Instead, they occur in alluvial, sedimentary deposits. The micro-diamonds present within carbonado (typically smaller than 20 microns or 20 millionths of a meter) lack traces of minerals found deep in the Earth's mantle, typical of other diamonds. However, they do possess traces of nitrogen, hydrogen, and osbornite (a mineral otherwise found only in meteors). This suggests they originated in outer space. Carbonados date from 2.6 to 3.8 billion years ago. This might also explain why they only occur in Brazil and the Central African Republic. During that time in the Earth's history, present-day Brazil and the western coast of Africa may have formed a supercontinent which preceded the better-known Gondwanaland. It's possible that a diamond meteorite struck the Earth at that location and time, accounting for Carbonado's current distribution.
