Description: Hello! This listing is for a complete ROD BEARING SERVICE for all 2001-2006 M3 engines. This PREVENTATIVE service should be done at any mileage to prevent premature rod bearing damage and engine failure. This service is suggested for all E46 M3 which have NO SYMPTOMS of bearing failure. Once the S54 engine has audible rod knock or metal flakes in the oil, the bearings have failed and will have damaged the crankshaft and a preventative service such as this will no longer be an option. It has been observed that all 2001-2006 M3 seem to suffer from premature bearing wear and this rod bearing service is the #1 "MUST HAVE" service by independent M3 experts and enthusiast owners alike. This upgrade service is a small price to pay for peace of mind. WHY:Expert engine builders and bearing manufacturers agree that the original BMW S54 bearing dimensions result in inadequate journal clearance and has been thoroughly documented. This, coupled with any potential "tolerance stacking" (- clearance) can result in a final bearing clearance which is significantly tighter than ideal and is the reason why we have seen engines fail after only a few thousand miles. Alternatively, if the "tolerance stack" was favorable (+clearance), clearances end up closer to the recommended dimension for this journal size, and we see those engines last well past 100k or more on original bearings. Evidence seen over the last 2 decades and thousands of engines documented suggest this is the primary cause of premature wear and failure, and not necessarily maintenance history or how carefully the engine is operated. Even S54 engines which had the factory bearing recall performed in the early 2000's suffer from the same premature wear and benefit from service. Unfortunately, the only way to definitively identify poor condition bearings is to physically remove and inspect them. Rather than replace the rod bearings with the same OEM bearings of inadequate clearance, we install BE, KING, or ACL rod bearings (customer specified) which are engineered with improved oil clearances more in-line with performance engine standards to eliminate the premature wear that plagues these engines. Additionally, our bearing services include a Tri-metal (lead/copper) design which allow owners to watch for any future bearing wear via oil analyses. Furthermore, ARP rod bolts are stronger bolts and eliminate potential bore distortion that can also cause premature bearing wear.
