Description: Beauty Berry Callicarpa Americana We have quite a few patches of Beauty Berry growing naturally on almost all of our farms. They are a very hardy perennial that loves our dry & sandy soil here in the Florida Panhandle. The furry green leaves come back in early spring. Shortly after, there are little balls of white flowers growing in 'towers' on each stem. Little green berries will start to form where the flowers once were. By late Summer, these berries will turn a deep purple. The plant itself is gorgeous! But we love to use the berries to make jelly & wine. There are some recipes online for Beauty Berry tea. We will have to try this out! Cardinals, Woodpeckers & Mockingbirds love to eat the berries too! The leaves can be crushed and rubbed on skin or clothing for a natural insect repellent. Most people will do this to deter Mosquitoes, but it also helps with ticks & ants. There are also recipes online to create your own natural bug spray. Native Americans reportedly used the roots, leaves, berries & stems medicinally.
