Description: After more than 60 years of collecting coins, it is time to move them along to new homes. Here is a very good antoninianus that was issued by Aurelian who ruled from 270-275 AD. As emperor he won an unprecedented series of military victories which reunited the Empire after it had nearly disintegrated under the pressure of barbarian invasions and internal revolt. Born under modest circumstances, he entered the Roman Army in 235 and continually climbed the ranks. He was selected to lead the calvary under emperor Gallienus and when Gallienus was assassinated, Claudius Gothicus became emperor until his death in 270 at which time Aurelian took the empire for himself. He continued to successfully fight invading tribes from Gaul, Brittania, and the Germanic tribes until his death on the field in 275AD. This 21mm Imperial bronze antoninianus has an attractive “sandy soil” patina and was issued under Aurelian between 272-274 AD. Having very good detail on both sides, it was well centered when struck and shows some light wear from circulation in the Roman marketplace. The obverse has a well detailed radiate, cuirassed bust right of Aurelian and the full legend IMP C AVRELIANVS AVG. The reverse has an interesting classic design of a woman standing right presenting a wreath to Aurelian and full legend reading RESTITVT ORBIS being translated, ”Restorer of the world.” This was minted in Cyzicus (present day Turkey) and the “A” mint mark shows in the exergue below the design. This coin shows in references RIC 348A, Cohen 209, and Sear 11599v.In its day, this coin would buy enough bread for 1-2 days for a family or about 2 liters of common wine. **AS I AM FINALLY DISTRIBUTING MY COINS FROM OVER 60 YEARS OF COLLECTING YOU WILL FIND AFFORDABLE COINS OF INTEREST AT MY SITE FOR THOSE JUST GETTING INTO ANCIENT COINS AS WELL AS FOR THE ADVANCED COLLECTOR – ALL PROVIDED WITH CONTEXT IN HISTORY.
