Description: Stirring original mixed-media painting on board by Navajo (Dine) artist, Angelo Marvin John (b. 1946). John was a decorated soldier in the Vietnam War and is reputed to be the first Native American pilot in the U.S. Air Force. In the work, he incorporated Indian motifs with military imagery (jet fighter). It measures 23 x 19 inches and is signed and dated lower right, '68. Signed again and titled, dated on verso: Spirit of Warriors. Very good condition. About the artist: Born in Flagstaff, Arizona in 1946, Angelo received his art education at the Institute of American Indian Art (IAIA) where he served as Student Body President in 1965, which incidentally, is when this work was created. Afterword, Angelo joined the U. S. Air Force becoming what is believed to be the first Native American pilot in the Air Force. Angelo Marvin John's works are held in the permanent collections of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Heard Museum, IAIA, and the Wheelwright Museum, to name a few.
