To measure what downstem size you need for your pipe, stick a pen or pencil into the pipe until it almost touches the glass, but not touching. Pinch the pen right above the top of the pipe's stem and measure from the tip of the pen to where your fingers are. That length is the length of downstem that will fit your pipe. You would always prefer a shorter downstem to one that is too long and touches the glass, as that can very easily lead to the downstem being broken.
