The front cover and inside article feature the Thirty-Sixth Annual ANTOINETTE PERRY AWARDS ceremony held on June 6th, 1982 at the Imperial Theatre in New York City and televised on CBS.The American Theatre Wing's Tony Awards® got their start in 1947 when the Wing established an awards program to celebrate excellence in the theatre. Named for Antoinette Perry, an actress, director, producer, and the dynamic wartime leader of the American Theatre Wing who had passed away the previous year, the Tony Awards made their official debut at a dinner in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Easter Sunday, April 6th, 1947. Vera Allen, Perry's successor as chairwoman of the Wing, presided over an evening that included dining, dancing, and a program of entertainment. Among those honored at the 1981-82 Tony's with acting awards were BEN HARNEY (Dreamgirls), JENNIFER HOLLIDAY (Dreamgirls), CLEAVANT DERRICKS (Dreamgirls), LILIANE MONTEVECCHI (Nine), ROGER REES (The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby), ZOE CALDWELL (Medea), ZAKES MOKAE (Master Harold and the Boys) and AMANDA PLUMMER (Agnes of God). The award for "Best Musical" went to "NINE", "Best Book of a Musical" to TOM EYEN (Dreamgirls) and "Best Original Score" to MAURY YESTON (Nine). "Best Play" went to DAVID EDGAR (The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby), "Best Choreography" to MICHAEL BENNETT and MICHAEL PETERS (Dreamgirls), "Best Direction of a Musical" to TOMMY TUNE (Nine) and "Best Direction of a Play" to TREVOR NUNN and JOHN CAIRD (The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby). The host for the Thirty-Sixth Annual Tony Awards was Tony Randall and presenting awards were Lucie Arnaz, Milton Berle, Victor Borge, Pam Dawber, Lillian Gish, Marvin Hamlisch, Lena Horne, Beth Howland, Robert Goulet, Swoosie Kurtz, Michele Lee, Hal Linden, Ann Miller, Robert Preston, Jason Robards, Ginger Rogers, Gary Sandy and Ben Vereen.
