Description: Title The Battle of Attu: A Record of the Decisive FightPublication Year 1959 First It has approx 44 pages. This booklet is mainly text-based, but it is a book about the Battle of Attu. The writing is by Mr. Semiyoshi Kobayashi, a superior private of the Yamazaki Unit. Yasuyo Yamazaki's CareerAfter serving in positions such as the Infantry Regiment 15, Commander of the Infantry Regiment 50 Replacement Unit, and Director of the Ordnance Department of the 36th Division, Yamazaki was promoted to Colonel in 1940 and became Commander of the Infantry Regiment 130. During the Pacific War, in April 1943, he was assigned to Attu Island as Commander of the 2nd District Defense Force of the North Sea Defense. The situation was already dire, and on May 12 of the same year, approximately 11,000 U.S. troops landed on the island to face the 2,638 defenders. The defenders were gradually pushed to the northeastern part of the island. On May 20, the Imperial General Headquarters decided to abandon the island. On the 29th, Yamazaki led the remaining 150 soldiers in a final charge, during which all were either killed or committed suicide, except for 29 wounded soldiers who were captured. The Imperial General Headquarters announced the event as a "glorious defeat" on May 30. Posthumously, Yamazaki was promoted two ranks to Lieutenant General.
