This was the official Canadian Queens Coronation Plate issued in 1953. Around the rim are the flags of each of Canada’s provinces. It’s made using a format called brown transferware and adds to the beauty of the portrait, although my photography skills doesn't do it justice. It was designed by the world-renowned English ceramic artist Clarice Cliff, whose work gained international acclaim and became highly sought after her passing in 1972. This 10.5-inch (27-cm) plate was part of the Confederation Series-Canada, approved by the Council of Industrial Design. Interestingly, the Royal Family requested the council recommend appropriate artists for several ‘official coronation’ items, including the 1953 Queen Coronation Plate. This royal involvement adds a unique historical significance to the plate. The only ‘flaw,’ which I confirmed with an expert in the field, is a couple of marks on the rear of the plate made during the glazing process. One of these marks, which you can see in the past picture (circled), adds a unique character to the plate, making it even more intriguing. This truly is a must-have for any Royal history fan.
