The route depicted on this map, designated U.S. Route 17 in the federal highway system, ran from Fredericksburg to Norfolk, through Tappahannock, by ferry to Yorktown, and across the James River Bridge to Portsmouth. Accompanying the map are photos and descriptive text on this historic area, as well as an inset plan of Yorktown and a schedule of Yorktown--Gloucester ferry crossings. The brochure opens to 18" x 16" and is copyrighted © 1949 by the American Automobile Association. The artwork on the front cover depicts the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown.
