Description: Handsome fold-out 1939 Esso Colonial Beacon Oil Company road map of New England, printed more than 78 years ago. This map opens to 31" x 26" and has great detail on old highway alignments in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, with cartography by the General Drafting Company. The map is drawn on a scale of 12 miles to one inch, and little airplane symbols locate flying fields for barnstorming pilots. On the reverse side of the map there is an index to cities and towns, an inset plan of Boston, and a colorful pictorial guide to New England. The map was published by Colonial Beacon in 1939 and is dated on the cover and in the legend. The cover photograph shows a coastal harbor scene, with docks and boats. Condition: This map is in very good, lightly used condition, with no rips, tears, or writing. There are a couple of small spots, possibly an old coffee spill, visible on the cover and the lower corner of the map; otherwise, it is bright, crisp, and clean.
