Written by Marlborough's renowned descendent Winston Churchill. This work was conceived and commenced upon the Conservative's defeat in the 1929 election, when Churchill had a little more spare time than he was used to. John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, was a statesman and soldier active during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century. He played a part in defeating the Monmouth Rebellion as well as in the conspiracy which led to King James' downfall in the Glorious Revolution. He is remembered as one of the great European generals of history.Volume I is the first edition, second impression, and is illustrated with thirty-five illustrations, eight facsimiles of documents including two folding, and fifteen maps and plans, including one folding. Collated, complete.Volume II is the first edition, first impression and is illustrated with thirty-one illustrations, three folding facsimiles of letters, and seventy-six maps and plans, six of which are folding. Collated, complete.Volume II includes the second impression unclipped dust wrapper.Including an ink inscription to the front free-endpapers of both volumes, dated 1933 and 1938 respectively. CONDITION In the publisher's original full cloth binding with gilt detailing to the front boards and spines. Externally, very smart, with some fading to the cloth to Volume I. A stain to the rear board of Volume I, and some bumping to the heads and tails of the spines and extremities to both volumes. Original unclipped dust wrapper to Volume II is smart, with some chipping to the extremities, and a few small closed tears to the top of the front of the wrap. Some light shelf marks to the wrap. Previous owner's ink inscription to the front free-endpapers of both volumes. Internally, both volumes firmly bound. A few marks to the fore-edge of Volume I, and the odd handling mark to the pages, but otherwise pages are bright and clean.
