Description: This is a fantastic pair of vintage/antique Japanese wooden geta for maiko/geiko/geisha. I believe that these shoes are circa 1930s and are called Pokkuri, Coppori, Okobo etc in Japanese. The girls started their training at a very young age to apprentice as Geisha (Maiko) - they wear Pokkuri with bells inside of them for the first month after their debut. The shoes in this listing each have a bell. The top of the shoes are covered with tatami mat, which is apparently very rare these days due to the high cost of it. The straps are made from pieces of velvet and brocade fabric. On the sides of the shoes are painted cranes on a lacquered surface. Cranes are associated with peace and prosperity in the Japanese culture. Condition:As seen in the photos, these shoes are old and have scuff marks and wear. The back of the shoes have damage to the lacquer surface and lacquer loss. The lacquer surface at the back of the shoes feels fragile but the surface in the sides feel secure. The tatami mat soles are overall clean with a few areas of staining. Approximate measurements: 7.25" long x 3.5” wide x 3” tall Thanks for looking!
