Description: battleship print the New York 1912 This is an attractive full page portrait of a new battleship which appeared in the Nov. 2, 1912, issue of Scientific American. It is over a century old. It measures 11 x 15.5 inches in size, and is in excellent condition. It presents a fine drawing of the New York, over the caption: NEW YORKOUR FIRST BATTLESHIP TO CARRY 14-INCH GUNS. Below the portrait are the ship's technical specifications for: Length, Beam, Mean Draft, Displacement, Speed, Coal, Oil, Armor, Armament, Torpedoes, and Complement (crew). The U.S.S. New York was built at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and launched on Oct. 30th, 1912, so this news item appeared almost simultaneously with this battleship first setting to sea. She served in both World War I and World War II, being refitted and modernized twice, in 1926 and 1942. Elsewhere in the Scientific American issue, a related article accompanied this illustration, and the first part of that article will be included with the print. I don't have the conclusion to that article, but the portion being included consists of nine column inches of text, under the headline of: Launching of the Battleship New York First Ship of U. S. Navy to Mount the 14-inch Gun. The text begins by saying: There was launched on October 30th at the New York Navy Yard, the New York, a battleship which marks a decided step forward in the development of the fighting power of our Navy. . . .
