Dark green cloth, with some leather. Photographs mounted back to back on card leaves, the majority with captions on the mounts. The majority and gelatin silver of similar, with a few albumen. Ownership inscription of Nina Wilson on front fly leaf of each album, one also with place and date given as 'Johannesburg 1911'. Size: albums - each approx. 33cm x 26cm / photographs - various, on average approx. 10cm x 8cm, though many are a bit larger or smaller.Photographs - Good condition / album covers - Fair only condition. The bindings are very worn and marked, and the spines are detached, with loose covers. Some edge-wear to card leaves. The photographs themselves are in mixed condition. Scattered fading and age-toning to a fairly large proportion, but many others retaining good tones. Please ask if you require a more detailed condition report, or view gallery images closely.An interesting pair of photograph albums containing approx. 330 images (plus a number of small images that we have not counted), dating mainly from 1910-12. Principally views and people in South Africa, while a few at the start of one album are of Europe and a number are taken on board various ships. There is a wide range of subject matter, including tribal life and mining, with focus also on the travels of Nina Wilson (the compiler of the albums) and her friends through towns and cities in South Africa. There is a poignant pilgrimage to the grave of a friend who fell in the Boer War, and unusual photos of Jo'burg under a blanket of snow. Much more of interest, but we will let the gallery images do the talking!
