Description: Extremely rare dual letters and envelope cover correspondence between friends while one was actively serving in Cuba during the Spanish American war. The front facing typed letter was sent from W.B. Miller of Cincinnati, Ohio to his friend Harry Niemeyer June 29th, 1898, (postage canceled June 30th). The second response letter found on the reverse side of the original paper and posted using the same, reverse side of the envelope, was sent back by Harry Niemeyer from Santiago Cuba on July 18th, 1898. Postage cancellations from both Santiago, Cuba and Cincinnati, Ohio are present on the reverse side of the envelope. In addition, the letter includes a fabric ribbon piece inscribed "6th Regiment U.S. Infantry". The original letter sent to Harry Niemeyer in Cuba can be read from the typed print shown in the photos. The response letter from Harry Niemeyer is as follows: -------------------------------- Santiago De Cuba July 18, '98 Dear Friend W. B. Miller Well old boy I arrived here on Sunday the 10th and marched up to the city a distance of 20 miles or so and went right in the trenches with our regiment and laid there while the city surrendered the 14th and we raised old glory yesterday the 17th and had a good time. I am well just now but the climate is very hard on a person, we marched through rain and slept in it and laid in the trenches in it, and let the sun dry it on my back it was horrible, but we are better now and feeling like a fighting cock, so you know the rest. Anyone says a Spaniard won't fight call them down. Well excuse me for using your paper the second time and the scribbling for I haven't anymore. Best regards to all and yourself and the family.
