Description: SOUTHERN CLUB SOURCE: Wayne Threadgill’s book Gambling in the Spa, Casino Chips, and Memorabilia 2018 Edition 10 This is the Cadillac of the Hot Springs casinos. Built in 1893 and opened in 1894. Located in the 200 block of Central Ave. and said to be as fine as any New York or Chicago establishment and nicest club in Hot Springs. Location location across from the Arlington and down the street from the Army Navy Hospital and hotels and bath houses used by the soldiers. The casino used a minimum of 50 different chips. Very few collectors are known to have one of each in their collection. The Southern Club has been documented for purchasing these chips from 1944-1960’s. In 1959 it was reported the club had 110 employees, 44 slot machines, three dice tables, two roulette wheels, and four blackjack tables. Separate bingo room held 120 players.
